India Kolkata flyover collapse: At least 20 dead

  A flyover under construction in the Indian city of Kolkata (Calcutta) has collapsed, killing at least 20 people and injuring nearly 100. A number of people are feared trapped under the concrete and steel bridge, which fell on a busy road. Images show residents using their bare hands to help the rescue effort. Safety issues such as lack of inspections and the use of substandard materials have plagued construction projects in the country. Shutdown of Obinim TV, others ‘step in the right direction’ – GIBA

  The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has lauded the move by the National Communication Authority (NCA) to take off some television channels in the country. GIBA believes that broadcast sector of the country needs to be sanitised and the move by the NCA is “in the right direction”. The NCA on Wednesday took off the screens, nine channels ATV, Clive TV, ECN, Zoe TV, BTA, Care TV, Kessben TV, Elijah TV and Obinim TV (OB TV) owned by controversial ‘Bishop’ Daniel Obinim. 3 SA ex-cops arrested by BNI granted bail

  A Circuit Court in Accra has granted bail in the sum of ¢20,000 each to the three south African ex-police officers brought to Ghana to train bodyguards of NPP leaders. All three pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime and unlawful training and were consequently granted bail with a surety each. Presenting details of the case before the court, DSP A.A.Annor said the accused South Africans arrived in Ghana on the 11th March 2016, ostensibly to conduct business but were caught training about 15 people. Belgium under attack

  Belgian police have issued a wanted notice for a suspect after bomb attacks at Brussels’ main airport and a metro station left more than 30 people dead. The man is suspected of involvement in the twin explosions which tore through Zaventem airport. He was seen on CCTV pushing a trolley through the airport with two other suspects. Both those men are believed to have died in the blasts, possibly by detonating suicide devices. So-called Islamic State (IS) said it was behind both the attacks in the Belgian capital. EOCO recovers over GH¢2.4m for Ghana in 2015

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in 2015 has investigated 186 cases, according to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Marietta Appiah-Oppong. She also indicated that the specialised government agency set up to monitor and investigate economic and organised crime on the authority of the Attorney General, is prosecuting 46 cases out of the 186 and has recovered an amount of GH¢2,419,443.72 to the state as at mid-year 2015   The Attorney General said these at the inauguration of the EOCO Board. Akufo-Addo announces Jake’s death to grief-stricken congregation in Kumasi

  Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party Nana Akufo-Addo has described as a tragedy, the passing of former NPP chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey. Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey died early Sunday in the United Kingdom after a short illness. The cause of his death is not known for now. Mr Obetsebi Lamptey served in various ministerial positions during the Kufour administration and led the NPP in the 2012 general elections. Majority Clash Over New CI 91 For 2016 Polls

  Parliament yesterday approved the new Constitutional Instrument (CI) 91 that gives authority to the Electoral Commission to register voters for public elections with some modified guidelines. However, the incorporation of a portion of the old CI 72 into the new CI generated a huge debate between the minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the majority National Democratic Congress MPs, with the minority kicking strongly against the provision in the CI 72 while the majority fully supported it. Judicial Service Sacks More Staff Over Anas Video

  The Judicial Service has dismissed and removed more staff from office for their involvement in the Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI corruption case. There are others who have been suspended for three months in matters unrelated to the aforementioned subject matter. A statement issued yesterday evening and signed by Justice Alex B.
