Kantanka vehicles can be youth–friendly

After a self-imposed painstaking survey of most bus stops or commuters bus boarding points in some parts of Accra, I shudder to say that access to commercial transportation remains one of the most dreaded activities in the life of the ordinary Ghanaian. Anyone who does not have the luxury of a private car dreads the several minutes he/she has to spend struggling, shoving and pushing for space in what is called in Ghanaian parlance, Trotro, not to mention the traffic situation on the road before reaching his/her destination. Obviously, there will always be people who will struggle over commercial vehicles and those who will sit in the luxury of their vehicles but […]

The Head of Financial Management Service at the Bank of Ghana, Stephen Opattah insists no single individual can skew the issuance of bonds to favour one person or another. He also insisted that given the operations of the bond issue it was practically impossible for anyone to predetermine who the investor will be. His comments made before members of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament Tuesday follows allegation by the Minority in Parliament that the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta had “cooked” the $2.25 billion bond issue for […]

Some operatives of National Security have reportedly stormed the residence of former Minister for Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, to retrieve some vehicles they believe belong to the state, the former Minister has revealed. In an interview with Citi News’ Umaru Sanda Amadu, the Odododiodoo legislator said the situation has left his wife, who is currently the only occupant of the house distraught. This was followed by a directive from the Minister to the Controller and Accountant General on the 10th of February 2017, to inform all public servants on the Government of Ghana […]

President Nana Akufo Addo has reiterated his resolve to deal with illegal mining, popularly referred to as Galamsey. Speaking at a durbar at the Dormaahene’s Palace in the Brong Ahafo Region, Nana Akufo Addo said his administration shares the concerns of many Ghanaians who are calling for a total ban of the operations of illegal miners. “The Ghana handed down to us by our forefathers is the same Ghana we must leave for the unborn generations. Prosecute perpetrators of child trafficking – Samira Bawumia

Second Lady, Samira Bawumia has called on law enforcement agencies to prosecute perpetrators of child trafficking and forced labour in the country. The wife of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said it is not enough to sensitise the citizens about the issue when the perpetrators are not prosecuted when apprehended. “When people are prosecuted, it will serve as a deterrent to others,” she said. Mrs Bawumia made the call at the launch of a baseline study on child trafficking and forced labour on the Volta Lake by International Justice Mission (IJM) last Thursday in Accra. Human trafficking is an international problem that affects millions of people across the world. In West […]

We don’t do galamsey; we provide technical support- Chinese man

Chinese nationals in the Wassa Akropong district of the Western Region say the only role they play in the illegal small-scale mining in the area is to provide technical support to local miners. They are therefore baffled by persistent claims in the media that Chinese are involved in illegal mining – an allegation left hanging loosely around their necks. In an interview with Adom Fm’s Kofi Adomah, Anthony Chi Wangi, one of the men who has lived in Ghana for 10 years said, “Chinese don’t do galamsey.” His comments come at a time many Chinese nationals in Ghana have been blamed for contributing significantly to the menace popularly referred to as galamsey in […]

Akufo-Addo confers with ex-Presidents at Flagstaff House

Economy, security and the controversy surrounding the retrieval of state vehicles may have dominated discussions between President Nana Akufo-Addo and his predecessors. The President is meeting with former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor and his immediate predecessor, John Dramani Mahama to deliberate on governance issues. Mr Mahama has been vociferous about his disapproval of how the retrieval of state vehicles is being handled. Deputy information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, however, says the meeting will center on more than the cars. “They will be having a general conversation, discussing many issues about the economy and other things that could be done to put the economy on track.
